The bands we love disbanded
and our favorite dogs are gone
along with my son’s crib
posted for free on Nextdoor
and then loaded into a stranger’s
black pickup. And as my toddler and I
stand at the end of the drive and
watch it pull away, disappearing
over the hilly dirt road, with sadness
I imagine the new grandpa
we gave it to tucking his folded map
into his glovebox before
turning up the radio, no doubt
transported back to a loyal lab
and pacifiers by a microdose
of invincible classic rock
on the way home to get
a spare room ready for a visit
from a wise, crying messenger.
