Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the girl in your logo?
That’s Penelope, from Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. We picked her as our mascot for a few reasons — the story itself has survived since the 7th century BC, for one, but Penelope is also known for her perseverance. While waiting for Odysseus to return from the Trojan War, several suitors enter Ithaca to win her hand. To spurn them, she makes a deal: When she finishes her father’s death shroud on her loom, she’ll pick one of the men to marry. Penelope is clever, though, and each night, she goes back and undoes the work she completed that day. Eventually, her husband returns to save her, but without Penelope, the story of The Odyssey would have been over before it even began — there’d have been no kingdom for Odysseus to return to, and no tension within the story to linger over. We aspire to follow her lead with our drafts — by dismantling what we have and persevering, the work becomes more.
Do I really need ten submissions?
Eventually, yes. For the first few issues, however, we’re being super flexible. We’d like you to list a few rejections that you’ve received, or talk to us about what you’ve changed. However, we really do want you to have gone through the “three R’s”: rejection, revision and resubmission!
