Welcome to EHL issue 2.2! We’re so excited to introduce you to our 20 amazing new poets and prose writers, as well as the extraordinary artist who has graced our cover. As many of our readers know, we are dedicated to bringing you work from people who persevere beyond rejection. Every single one of these pieces is better thanks to revision and hard work, and we couldn’t be prouder.
For this note, we wanted to focus on something that comes after all of that rejection and revision, but is no less vital to the writer’s life.
Publicity is worth its weight in gold, as any writer can tell you. Even those of us lucky enough to get a contract with a traditional publisher are expected to shoulder most of the responsibility for promoting and marketing our own books. Creative writing is a competitive endeavor, and every year, millions of new works get released into the world. To have your stories, poems, essays, or novels read by anyone other than your family, closest friends, or workshop members, you have to perform the laborious task of getting the word out. This, like many writing-adjacent activities, is tedious, often uncomfortable, and takes precious time away from your actual writing.
Eleventh Hour Literary wants to help you with that. Once you have published with us, we consider you family and want to sing your praises to the literary community. We already think you’re awesome. Let us help convince other readers you are awesome, too. Our Contributor Spotlights allow us to give you free publicity and promotion for whatever brilliant story, essay, poem, or book you’ve created and are about to unleash. If you have something coming out within twelve months, let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
Some call it “promotion.” EHL calls it “community building.”
